My
obsession with nature is expressed through art. After my daily walk through
Essex County’s South Mountain Reservation, I find myself returning to my studio inspired to capture the endless beauty of the cycle of life that unfolds around me. A mushroom growing like coral, an old rotting tree snag or a glimpse of an animal I hadn’t seen before – I transform these images into sculptures and paintings with an urgency to “save” them. Through my work as a board member of the South Mountain Conservancy, I play a role in reforesting a 2000 plus acre reservation. I have come to understand the vital need to preserve habitat to support wildlife. My artistic focus is on en- dangered species that are dwindling or extinct because of urban sprawl and the failure to take care of our lands. My work in this series juxtaposes decaying New Jersey landscapes and the persistence of wildlife within our urban and suburban environments. I am interested in communicating on both a visceral and intellectual level to reveal a vision of renewal and conservation. - Tricia Zimic
"Tricia Zimic's art in this series
creatively depicts the very essence of the conflict between urban sprawl and
our endangered wildlife. Local extinction of New Jersey's biodiversity
threatens ecosystem health and the life-giving services we all depend on,
yet we never hear or see anything about it!"
